Melasma is a skin condition caused by discolouration of the skin. The skin usually changes colour and turns to black or tan. Melasma is entirely benign. This means that treatment for it is entirely for cosmetic reasons. This skin disorder mostly affects women.

There are different ways of removing melasma. I will focus on 10 ways. There are more ways to get rid of melasma but these are the most common.

  1. glycolic chemical peel kitMelasma can be gotten rid of by the use of chemical peels. These peels simply work by you applying them on the affected area and leave to dry. You can then peel it off. This will cause the skin to blister and in turn, new skin will grow. There are many chemical peels – glycolic acid is one of them.
  2. Laser treatments are also used to treat melasma. Laser beams are used on the patches. This method is very effective and fast. It is a very popular treatment option. However, you should note that it is somewhat costly.
  3. Hydroquinone is a very popular treatment option for this skin condition. It is a skin lightening agent.
  4. Azelaic acid is used on the skin to treat melasma.
  5. zinc oxide sunscreenThe sun is not friendly to your skin and that is why you always have to shield yourself. Sunscreen is a very important aspect of treatment. You will make no progress with any treatment unless you completely avoid the sun. Use sunscreens based on titanium and zinc. They are the best.
  6. Lactic acid is good for the skin. It can be found in milk products and also in compounds. Use it as treatment for melasma. It replenishes the skin and cleanses it.
  7. Skin lightening agents work well on these patches. They change the color of the skin and after some time, you will get an even skin tone.
  8. Tretinoin is very effective on patches caused by this skin condition. This compound reduces excess pigmentation leading to an even skin tone.
  9. Dermabrasion works wonders on melasma. This is better done by a dermatologist as melanocytes can easily get damaged.
  10. Microdermabrasion is almost the same as dermabrasion. It is however more detailed.

As you have seen, there are many approaches to dealing with melasma. Some skins tend to be allergic to some treatment. Check with your dermatologist to know what is best for you. You can also hide the patches by use of make-up.
