Melasma is a skin disorder. The skin usually changes colour to black or tan. Melasma patches develop and are normally rough and have irregular shapes. Melasma has many causes. It can be inherited or acquired. Prolonged sun exposure damages the skin and the structure of the cells that produce melanin-the melanocytes. Some birth control pills especially the oral ones are known to cause this skin disorder. Anti-malarial drugs are also known to cause melasma.

Melasma can be a difficult skin condition to trea as it takes time for it to go away. There are several home treatment options for melasma.

Glycolic acid is used to treat melasma. Use it at the comfort of your home.

There are chemical peels that you can use on your skin. One of them is lactic acid compounds. Lactic acid replenishes the skin by cleansing it. Keep using it and you will get your beautiful skin back.

Yogurt contains lactic acid. You should use it for your skin as it cleanses it well. Apply yogurt on your melasma 30 minutes before taking a bath and rinse off while you shower. Do this for some time and your skin will greatly improve.

There are many skin lightening creams. These creams are known to work on the skin until you get an even skin tone.

Vinegar is used in food in your home. It can also serve a purpose on your skin. Diluted vinegar is a good cleansing agent. All you need to do is apply it on your face and rinse with it. Do not wipe but allow air to lock in the moisture. Incase you are wondering how dilute the vinegar has to be, mix it with water in a ratio of 1:1 and you are ready to use it.

Melasma is also treated by the use of lemon juice. Lemon juice is acidic. The acid in lemon works by burning the skin. Use this on the patches and it will make the top layer of the skin to peel off. With time, the patches will fade away. Onions are also used to treat melasma. Mix it with apple cider vinegar.
