Melasma problem is common in women as compared to male. Women bodies have hormones that activate the production of melanin. Melasma problem occurs as a result of too much exposure to the sunlight. It develops on the upper lip, cheeks, forehead and the lower lip. It can be described by dark hyper pigmentation on the skin that is irregularly demarcated.

If your body has hormonal imbalance it can cause excessive production of melanin which if exposed to sunlight could develop to Melasma. Melasma is only developed if the skin is exposed to sunlight. Melasma causes cosmetic problems to people affected and therefore it is important to know how it can be treated.

When your skin is exposed to too much sunlight, melanocytes are activated leading to production of excess melanin which is a skin pigment. This then develops to Melasma when exposed to sunlight. Excess melanin can also be produced when a women is using birth control pill or when a woman is pregnant. Use of hormonal replacement therapy can also cause hormonal imbalance in the body.

If you are using birth pills, they can cause changes in the level of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone in the body hence hormonal imbalance. Pregnancy too causes this changes but Melasma developed during pregnancy is likely to disappear after child birth. Patients suffering from thyroid are also at higher risk to get malasma problem due to high level of melanocyte which causes the production of melanin.

Melasma problem can be avoided if you avoid the sun. Use of sunscreens is also another way to prevent the skin from Melasma problem. Sunscreens help your skin not to get damaged by sunrays that are harmful.

Melasma problem can be treated using breaching creams. These creams are applied on the spot and it helps lighten Melasma. You are not supposed to apply this cream on areas that are not affected by Melasma. If applied on normal skin it will cause the skin to lighten. Application of the cream should be stopped immediately Melasma patches disappear.

Chemical peels and microdermabrason is also another way to treat Melasma. You can also use hydroquinone to reduce the production of melanin. Be careful not to use too much hydroquinone as it can cause side effects.

Laser treatment is used to treat dermal Melasma problem which affects the inner layer of the skin. It is an expensive but effect way to treat Melasma.
