Melasma also known as chloasma and commonly known as” mask of pregnancy” is a skin condition that is characterized by dark irregular patches of pigmentation on the face or whereby large brown spots form on the face primarily on the cheek bones, the forehead and the upper lip and is common among pregnant women. It is thought to be caused by the stimulation of melanocytes by estrogen and progesterone.

When women are continually exposed to the very bright heat of the sun, they may begin to see the growth of melasma on their faces. This skin discoloration disorder occurs in certain parts of the body when they get exposed to the sunlight directly bringing about shades that are not smooth or balanced and may look unattractive an disagreeable some.

This will occur in cases when women are going through hormonal body adjustments during pregnancies or at menopause and have abnormal levels of progesterone and estrogen. Apart from irritable behaviors, physical changes also occur and that is reflected in skin discolorations and the condition known as melasmas.  Many women will want to get rid of this situation because they are very conscious about how they look especially on their faces.

Women who take contraceptive pills or are going through hormone therapy and those who are always exposed to the sun are more susceptible to melasma. Mostly Latina and Asian women or any women with skin of brown complexion are more likely to have melasma spots on their faces. You will see such spots on their faces in the forehead, the cheeks and the nose. This condition is however not contagious. Should it be something to worry about? Melasma is usually a temporary skin condition that will fade although they might take longer in some women due to body changes and hormonal levels.

Should they continue to grow in width or should there be an appearance of them in new areas of the body, it would be prudent to seek the care of a certified dermatologist for advice, evaluation and treatment plans because they might be something else and not melasmas.

There are many treatment options for this problem and although it is a temporary skin condition, some might still want to look at these options. It is good to first examine all the options available and then pick one that suits you. The more invasive treatment options like microdermabrasion or dermapeel should be the last resorts because such options might make the condition worse and cause permanent damage if the patient’s face does not respond well to treatment. The more natural or organic methods to treat melasma are more appealing.

Natural melasma treatments may include rubbing slices of lemon on your face and leaving it for fifteen minutes before washing off or using cucumber juice overnight. Such natural home remedies can be applied for three or four days. If they don’t work out then there are other medications and creams like tretinion hydroquinone which are over the counter solutions for applying to the face.
