Melasma is a skin condition where the skin changes coloration. It changes to black and tan. This skin condition is characterized by irregular patches. The patches can also be black in color. Melasma affects many body parts. They include the lips, forehead, cheek and nose.

Melasma has no other symptoms apart from the ones listened. This skin condition can affect anyone but it is more common in women who take use oral birth control methods and women who are pregnant. There are different treatment options for melasma. Azelaic acid is a good option for treatment for melasma. It works by decreasing the activity of melanocytes. Melanocytes are the cells that produce melanin in the skin.

Melasma can be treated by laser resurfacing. This is the use of a laser beam to treat melasma. Laser treatments are very effective and fast but they are costly too.

Skin lightening creams are used to treat melasma. These creams work by changing the color of the patches and after continued use; you will have your even skin back.

Hydroquinone is another treatment option for melasma. This element simply works by reducing production of melanin. This treatment has a powerful component known as hydroxyphenolic which prevents tyrosinase.

Chemical peels are also used to treat melasma. These peels are different and there is a wide range to choose from. The most popular is glycolic acid peel. It is very safe and compatible with most skins.

Sun protection is also treatment for this skin disorder. The sun’s harmful UV light is not good for skin that has melasma. The sun’s rays destroy the skin and make the situation worse. Sun avoidance is considered the best treatment for this skin disorder as whatever treatment you might use, there will not be impressive progress without avoiding the sun. The sun destroys the skin hence exposing yourself to the sun will simply be taking you two steps back.

Finally, you need to note that melasma is not easily treated. It takes a lot of time for the patches to disappear and a lot of patience is needed. Recurrences are also very likely. Please ensure that you also avoid contact with the sun as this will trigger more reoccurrences. If you have to go out in the sun, use sunscreen with a broad spectrum.
